WGS84 is indeed a 1984 standard. Its predecessor was issued in 1972.
Who's to say there won't be another revision in, say 2014? Surely we
should allow for such an event?
Also, the forthcoming Galileo system:

will not, I understand, use WGS84.

How would you convert this set of coordinates:
1.98 S, 353.82 E
to WGS84? (It might help to bear in mind that they're on Mars, not
Earth.)
